Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but unfortunately for the Augusta Prep Day Cavaliers, they weren't the ones who walked away with it. They were dealt a 54-12 defeat at the hands of the Gators on Friday. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Augusta Prep Day in their matchups with Gatewood: they've now lost five in a row.
Despite the defeat, Augusta Prep Day saw an underclassman step up: Carter Chavous rushed for 74 yards and two touchdowns.
Ames Johnson was his usual excellent self, rushing for 87 yards and a touchdown on only five carries, while also throwing for 208 yards and four touchdowns while completing 76.9% of his passes for Gatewood. Gatewood also got a significant boost from Hunter Johnson, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 86 yards.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Augusta Prep Day to a paltry 196 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Gatewood's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid the passer out three times before it was all said and done. Luke McNeill was especially locked on to Augusta Prep Day's QB and sacked him twice.
Augusta Prep Day's loss dropped their record down to 3-10. As for Gatewood, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 9-2 record this season.
Augusta Prep Day does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Gatewood will be playing in front of their home fans against Briarwood Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Briarwood Academy comes in on four and Gatewood on three.
