Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2020 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Thomas Fidone II of
Lewis Central (Council Bluffs) is the 2020 MaxPreps Iowa High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound senior tight end caught 43 passes for 845 yards and 10 touchdowns this fall, helping the Titans go 8-2 and reach the Class 3A quarterfinals.
Fidone's best game of the year may have come in a 49-28 win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton back on Sept. 4 as he hauled in nine passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns. He also produced 100-yard receiving games in wins over Glenwood and Creston.
A Nebraska signee, Fidone is regarded as the nation's top senior tight end prospect by 247Sports. He fielded 36 offers, including College Football Playoff participants Alabama, Notre Dame and Ohio State.
As a junior, Fidone caught 39 passes for 576 yards and seven touchdowns as Lewis Central compiled a 9-2 record.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released Jan. 29.
