Basketball Recap: Destini Shorts' Big Game Can't Quite Lead King's Christian Academy over Huntingtown

King's Christian Academy was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 35-29 heartbreaker at the hands of the Huntingtown Hurricanes. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 181st, while the Hurricanes are ranked 43rd).

King's Christian Academy's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Destini Shorts, who posted seven points along with 13 rebounds and three steals. Shorts is also crushing it when it comes to blocks: she's posted at least three every time she's taken the court this season. Jada Cromwell was another key player, going 5 for 11 on her way to 11 points and three steals.

Huntingtown's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Eva Powell led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on nine points and 12 boards. Hannah Graham was another key player, putting up eight points along with ten boards and three blocks.

King's Christian Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 1-6. As for Huntingtown, they pushed their record up to 7-0 with the victory, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. King's Christian Academy will host Southern Maryland Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Southern Maryland Christian Academy will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something King's Christian Academy surely won't give up without a fight. As for Huntingtown, they will welcome Thomas Stone at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
