Basketball Recap: Cheyenne Comes Up Short

Cheyenne was the 62-56 winner over Somerset Sky Pointe when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The Cheyenne Desert Shields took a 71-58 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Somerset Sky Pointe Eagles on Monday. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Friday (57), the Desert Shields still had to take the loss.

Despite the loss, Cheyenne saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Igniz Segovia-Gonzalez dropped a double-double on 20 points and 15 boards. With that strong performance, Segovia-Gonzalez is now averaging an impressive 8.1 rebounds per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Julian Smith, who posted eight points and seven boards.

Even though they lost, Cheyenne smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive rebound total in four consecutive matches.

Somerset Sky Pointe got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Ja'Cory Gory out in front who went 7 of 16 en route to 26 points along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Gory's evening made it five games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Kaden Jackson, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 boards.

Cheyenne has traveled a rocky road recently having lost ten of their last 12 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-17 record this season. As for Somerset Sky Pointe, the win snapped their losing streak at four games and leaves them with a 9-13 record.

Cheyenne didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 75-22 defeat against Sierra Vista on the 30th. Somerset Sky Pointe has also already played their next match, a 74-46 victory against Amplus Academy on the 30th.
