Given their disadvantage in the MaxPreps state rankings, Sumner should expect quite the challenge on Friday. They will challenge Kentwood on the road at 7:00 PM. With the two teams each stumbling in off of a defeat, both will be hungry for the victory.
Sumner took care of business in their home opener. They dodged a bullet last week, finishing off St. Helena College and Career Academy 7-6. The tight race was right in line with the MaxPreps state rankings' forecast.
Meanwhile, Kentwood had to kick off their season on the road, but they showed no ill effects. They were the clear victor with a 27-6 margin. Not happy with the 8-6 score at halftime, they made a real splash in the second half.
Their wins lifted both teams to an identical 1-0. In their win, Kentwood relied heavily on senior Terrell Hookfin, who picked up 65 yards on the ground and threw 2 TDs; a key strategy for Sumner will lie in finding a way to minimize his impact.
