After seven lead changes,
Rome (Ga.) took the lead for good when it scored a touchdown with under a minute left in the fifth quarter and held on to beat
North Paulding (Dallas, Ga.) 57-56 on Saturday.
After trailing 22-15 at the half, the Wolfpack went ahead on a touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the fourth.
By the end of the third, Rome found itself trailing by 14 points as North Paulding captured the lead thanks to five scores in the quarter. NP scored on a touchdown run by
Matt Mixon, a touchdown pass by
Chase Noonan to
Corn Collins, a passing touchdown, a touchdown catch by Noonan and a two-point conversion in the quarter.
The Dallas school missed two extra point attempts in the loss.
Noonan made a difference for the Wolfpack. He threw one touchdown, ran for one touchdown and caught one touchdown.
The defeat comes as a step back for North Paulding, which notched a 29-28 victory over South Paulding in its previous outing. With the win RHS extended its winning streak to three games.
North Paulding (6-2) goes up against Paulding County in a AAAAA Region 5 game matchup next week, while Rome (5-1) locks horns with East Paulding also in a AAAAA Region 5 game.
