Basketball Recap: Cameron Ackerman's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Kearny over Monte Vista

Kearny was the 89-47 winner over Monte Vista when they last played one another back in December of 2015, but their luck changed this time around. The Kearny Komets opened the new year with a less-than-successful 89-79 defeat to the Monte Vista Monarchs. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Monday (60), the Komets still had to take the loss.

Several Komets players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Cameron Ackerman, who went 11 of 16 on his way to 25 points and seven rebounds. Those 25 points gave Ackerman a new career-high. Marlon Mejia was another key player, dropping a double-double on 13 points and 11 boards.

Monte Vista's win on Friday was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Alex Villanueva, who posted 21 points along with five rebounds and four steals. Another player making a difference was Daesean Jenkins, who scored 17 points and six boards.

Kearny's loss dropped their record down to 10-5. As for Monte Vista, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 9-8 record this season.

Kearny wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 69-48 victory against Classical Academy on the 7th. As for Monte Vista, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 72-54 win against Clairemont on the 7th.
