The Gaffney Indians won the last time they faced the Spartanburg Vikings, and things went their way on Tuesday too. Gaffney walked away with a 53-45 victory over Spartanburg. Given Gaffney's advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 27th, while Spartanburg is ranked 109th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Gaffney was led to victory by Izzabella Sarratt and Tianah Hopper. Sarratt scored 13 points along with six steals, while Hopper scored 18 points along with five rebounds and two blocks. That makes it four consecutive games in which Hopper has scored at least a third of Gaffney's points. Lauren Mathis was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
Despite the loss, Spartanburg still got an impressive performance from Genesis Young-flucker, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds. Young-flucker is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down ten or more in the last five games she's played. Another player making a difference was D'Nalya (Bop) Sherrod, who scored seven points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Gaffney has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 13 games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-5 record this season. As for Spartanburg, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 9-14.
Coincidentally, both teams will both be playing Boiling Springs the next time they take the court. Gaffney will head out to face Boiling Springs at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, while Spartanburg will host them at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
