The Richmond Red Devils are taking a road trip to face off against the Mt. Vernon Marauders at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Mt. Vernon took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Richmond, who comes in off a win.
On Thursday, Richmond got the win against Cambridge City Lincoln by a conclusive 11-1. The victory continues a trend for the Red Devils in their matchups with the Golden Eagles: they've now won seven in a row.
Darin Candlish tossed a big game, striking out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
On the hitting side, Weston Jones was incredible, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, two runs, and one stolen base. Those three doubles gave him a new career-high. Aiden Andresen also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Richmond kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon came up short against Pendleton Heights on Thursday and fell 6-1. The Marauders have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Mt. Vernon saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mason Meyer, who went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases. Another was Gavin Weaver, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases.
Richmond's record now sits at 8-6. As for Mt. Vernon, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Richmond has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Mt. Vernon struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Richmond couldn't quite finish off Mt. Vernon when the teams last played back in May of 2025 and fell 2-0. Can the Red Devils avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
