The Vernon Yellowjackets will take on the Wewahitchka Gators at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Vernon has given up an average of 11.7 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Vernon is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 11 runs on Monday, they were much more limited against Ponce De Leon on Tuesday. They came up short against the Pirates, falling 11-1. The Yellowjackets haven't had much luck with the Pirates recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they've met.
Vernon saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lila Owens, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-1.
Meanwhile, Wewahitchka had to endure a six-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They had just enough and edged out Blountstown 7-6 on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Gators have posted since March 28, 2024.
Wewahitchka let Jayla Clayton and Eden Rustin run wild. Clayton scored a run and stole three bases while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances, while Rustin went 3-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most hits Rustin has posted since back in March of 2024. Emma Rustin was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2.
Wewahitchka's victory bumped their record up to 5-16. As for Vernon, their loss dropped their record down to 5-13.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Vernon has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Wewahitchka struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Vernon came out on top in a nail-biter against Wewahitchka in their previous matchup last Tuesday, sneaking past 8-7. Do the Yellowjackets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Gators turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
