Two dominant signal callers in Savoy Nichols and Xyran Upshaw are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The University Trojans will look to defend their home field on Friday against the Brenham Cubs at 7:00 p.m. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with University sitting on three straight wins and Brenham on eight.
On Friday, University humbled Waco with a 36-7 victory. The result was nothing new for the Trojans, who have now won four matchups by 24 points or more so far this season.
University got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was London Smith out in front who picked up 150 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Another back making a difference was Ray Brown Jr., who rushed for 124 yards on only 12 carries.
University didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Waco to a completion percentage of just 28.6%. The team can thank Khylen Estelle for the heroic effort on defense: he. Sadly, that's becoming something of a trend for University; they were averaging 60.8%completion percentage earlier this season, but in their last three games they've fallen to only 60.8%.
University didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Darrel Stewart, Zam Jackson, and Jeremiah Green picked up one apiece. Joaquin Martinez was another major factor on D, making 12 total tackles (4.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, Brenham gave up the first points on Friday, but they didn't give up any more after. They came out on top against Ellison by a score of 33-25. Given the Cubs' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 107th, while the Eagles are ranked 345th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
The match pitted two dominant signal callers against one another in Upshaw and Marlyn Smith. Upshaw had a great game and threw for 159 yards and four TDs. Meanwhile, Smith was balling out in the loss, throwing for 246 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also rushing for 59 yards and one score.
University's win bumped their record up to 5-3. As for Brenham, their victory bumped their record up to 8-0.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. University has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 154.9 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Brenham struggles in that department as they've been averaging 172.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
University was taken down by Brenham 43-7 in their previous meeting back in November of 2024. That game was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Trojans were down 36-7.
