The Wellington Dukes are taking a road trip to challenge the Midview Middies at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Wellington comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
Wellington couldn't beat Columbia on Thursday even though they stacked four runs on them in the fifth inning. The Dukes came up short against the Raiders, falling 14-4. That's two games in a row now that the Dukes have lost by exactly ten runs.
Wellington saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brynn White, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one RBI. Leighla Selzer also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.
Meanwhile, Midview never let their opponents score on Thursday. They put the hurt on Avon with a sharp 7-0 win. The game was the first time the Middies have beaten the Eagles on their field since May 11, 2023.
Savannah Holcomb was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Dezirae Thomas, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Hailey Dye, who went 3-for-4 with one run.
Midview kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Avon only managed two.
The victory got Midview back to even at 3-3. As for Wellington, their loss dropped their record down to 0-6.
Wellington came out on top in a nail-biter against Midview when the teams last played back in April of 2021, sneaking past 9-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Dukes since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
