South Vermillion and Covington are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Wildcats will be playing in front of their home fans against the Trojans at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. South Vermillion is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
Wednesday just wasn't the day for South Vermillion's offense. They fell 3-0 to Riverton Parke on Wednesday. The Wildcats just can't catch a break and have now endured three defeats in a row.
Covington not only won on Wednesday, but they posted their biggest win since May 1st (when they won 15-5). They blew past North Vermillion 14-8. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Trojans.
Nash Martin was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. Martin was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cian Moore, who went 2-for-4 with four stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Covington is undefeated when Moore posts two or more runs, but 6-9 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Noah Keller, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI, one run, and one double.
Covington was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .414. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
South Vermillion's loss dropped their record down to 12-10. As for Covington, their victory bumped their record up to 12-9.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. South Vermillion has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Covington struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
South Vermillion couldn't quite get it done against Covington in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 as they fell 8-4. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
