Lone Star Small-School Storylines
Previously Top-Ranked Canadian Falls in 1A
Conventional logic would figure Canadian would have an easier time winning a state title in 1A after winning a state title last season in 2A. Stratford gave Canadian a reminder how tough West Texas 1A football can be by upsetting the previously top-ranked Wildcats, 17-7. Canadian’s win-streak was snapped at 19.
Stratford, who moved from No. 8 to No. 5 in this week’s Texas Associated Press poll, got off to a flying start when Klinton Keener plunged in from 1-yard out to give the Elks a 7-0 lead after the point after. Jesse Lopez added a 28-yard field goal early in the second quarter to extend the lead to 10-0.
The Wildcats responded with a 70-yard punt return to paydirt by Alex Reyes. However, it would be the only time Canadian would sniff the end zone thanks to a stingy Elks defense.
Stratford – which forced five turnovers in the victory – held Canadian to 193 yards of offense and forced Canadian quarterback Brandon Robinson to go 6-of-26 in the passing game.
In the fourth quarter, the Elks got an exclamation point touchdown when quarterback Kaleb Horsford hit Manuel Chavoya on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 2:10 remaining.
Clyde Knocks Cisco Out of No. 1 in 2A
It was billed as a headliner in West Texas and a potential rivalry. Clyde defended its home turf and upset previously 2A No. 1 Cisco, 20-6.
In the first quarter, Cisco got on the scoreboard first with an 8-yard touchdown run from Robert Medina. The two-point conversion failed, leaving Cisco’s early lead at 6-0.
Clyde struck back with 6:28 left in the second quarter when Jacob Gonzales hit Justin Riley on a 63-yard touchdown pass. Branson Hurt booted through the extra point to give the hosts a 7-6 lead, which would hold up into halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Clyde would put the game away in the fourth quarter. With 8:54 left, Gonzalez hit P.J. Martinez on a 13-yard touchdown pass. The point after failed, leaving the lead at 13-6. Gonzales scored on a 1-yard run just over two minutes later cap-off the upset.
Colby Smith rushed for 115 yards to lead Clyde, while Gonzales added 65 yards rushing to go along with 110 passing yards. Cisco committed four turnovers in the loss, including three fumbles.
Gilmer Stumps Chapel Hill
Gilmer rolled to a 22-point advantage in the first quarter and never looked back in a battle of 3A top 10 teams en route to a 35-6 win over Chapel Hill.
Of course, junior quarterback Darian Godfrey was behind Gilmer’s first quarter explosion. Godfrey – nicknamed “Stump” – is one of the top quarterbacks in the junior class in Texas regardless of school size. Godfrey rushed for two of his three touchdowns in the first quarter and added a pair of scoring strikes in the win. Godfrey finished with 219 yards passing and added 68 yards on the ground in the win.
Chapel Hill, which fell out of the Associated Press rankings following the loss, was led by stat-stuffer Matthew Tucker. Tucker rushed for 157 yards and scored Chapel Hill’s only touchdown on a 46-yard scamper. Tucker has eclipsed 1,500 yards on the ground this season and has 17 touchdowns to go with it.
This and That
In a typical Liberty Hill showing, the winners of 32 straight games flattened Canyon Lake 56-0 behind 431 rushing yards. Dusty Boyd rushed for 119 yards to lead Liberty Hill, while Tyler Lawhorn scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the rout. Liberty Hill is No. 1 in 3A… Following Cisco’s loss to Clyde, Arp is the new No. 1 in 2A. Arp is 6-0 on the season and coming off a 31-20 win over Troup. Arp’s defense forced five turnovers in the win, with LaVocheya Cooper intercepting two passes. Arp’s offense was led by Michael Wade, who rushed for 145 yards on 19 carries… Maud is the new No. 1 in 1A and comes off a 60-0 pounding of Union Hill. Quarterback Jake McClain completed 7-of-14 passes for 242 yards and five touchdowns for Maud in the rout.
