The Las Cruces Bulldawgs will head out on the road to face off against the La Cueva Bears at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the pair will really light up the scoreboard.
With a playoff game on the line, Las Cruces rose to the challenge on Friday. They secured a 38-34 W over Centennial. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Las Cruces.
Meanwhile, La Cueva came tearing into Friday's match with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 39 points) and they left with even more momentum. They claimed a resounding 45-6 victory over Farmington at home. La Cueva might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team's won eight contests by 28 points or more this season.
La Cueva relied on the efforts of Cheeto Lumbrera iii, who rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns, and Cameron Dyer, who rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns on only nine carries. Dyer hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for six straight games.
Another reason for the win was La Cueva's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. In fact, those sacks all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Mason Posa.
Las Cruces has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 7-5 record this season. As for La Cueva, their victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-3.
Las Cruces ended up a good deal behind La Cueva in their previous meeting back in September of 2021, losing 28-10. Can Las Cruces avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
