Softball Recap: Los Lunas Takes Down Ranked Rio Rancho

Los Lunas faced Rio Rancho in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. Los Lunas walked away with a 9-6 win over Rio Rancho. The game was the first time the Tigers have beaten the Rams on their field since May 1, 2021.

Ashley Baca spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and five unearned) runs on ten hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Los Lunas let Jaslene Duran and Jacelyn Baca run wild. Duran scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3, while Baca went 2-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. Those three runs gave Duran a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kellyn Lucero, who went 2-for-4 with one home run.

They weren't the only ones working in the hit department: Los Lunas kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Los Lunas has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.1 runs on average over those games. This is the second loss in a row for Rio Rancho and nudges their season record down to 7-6.

Looking ahead, a feisty cat fight will be fought as Los Lunas Tigers duke it out with Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Los Lunas' pitchers better be ready for this one: Atrisco Heritage Academy has averaged an impressive 9.4 runs per game this season. As for Rio Rancho, they will face off against Bloomfield on Saturday. Rio Rancho is facing Bloomfield at the right time seeing as Bloomfield is stuck on a six-game losing streak.
