After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Tabiona, the Monticello Buckaroo were happy to have found some success on Saturday. Everything went their way against Merit Preparatory Academy as Monticello made off with a 60-35 win. Winning is a bit easier when you work as a team to rack up 11 more assists than your opponent, as Monticello did.
Monticello was led to victory by Jay Mcdonald and Curtis Bunker. Mcdonald scored 16 points along with 3 steals, while Bunker dropped a double-double on 20 points and 10 rebounds. Mason Atwood was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
Despite the loss, Merit Preparatory Academy saw an underclassman step up: Miles Petersen scored 16 points along with 6 rebounds. Petersen scored a full 45.7% of Merit Preparatory Academy's points, the second time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jakob Hopf, who scored 2 points along with 5 rebounds.
Monticello's win bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Merit Preparatory Academy, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-4.
Monticello will be playing at home against Montezuma-Cortez at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in their respective states (Montezuma-Cortez is ranked 124th in Colorado, while Monticello is ranked 128th in Utah). As for Merit Preparatory Academy, they will head out on the road to face off against Waterford at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Waterford is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
