On Friday, Laurens Academy was able to grind out a solid victory over Wardlaw Academy, taking the game 35-24. Given Laurens Academy's advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 76th, while Wardlaw Academy is ranked 208th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Cambridge Academy beat Richard Winn Academy 32-28 on Friday.
Cambridge Academy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Alex Cockrell led the charge by scoring ten points along with seven rebounds and seven steals. Cockrell has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last 11 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jillian Mapes, who scored six points along with ten rebounds and eight steals.
Laurens Academy's victory bumped their record up to 22-1. As for Cambridge Academy, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 14-7 record this season.
Laurens Academy didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Cambridge Academy in their previous meeting last Friday, but they still walked away with a 47-41 win.
