Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Maryvale). They walked away with a 39-26 win over the North Canyon Rattlers on Thursday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Panthers needed considering they were shut out in their previous contest.
Maryvale found their leader in sophomore Messan Alokpovi, who threw for 155 yards and four touchdowns, and also rushed for 57 yards and one score. The Panthers' leading receiver Miles Woods was Alokpovi's top target yet again, picking up 92 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.
Maryvale didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Woods and Jayden French. Woods got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Several Rattlers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Dom Dampier, who picked up 136 receiving yards and one touchdown. AJ Garcia handled things on the ground, rushing for 95 yards and a rushing touchdown.
With the victory, Maryvale broke their four-game losing streak and moved their record to 2-4. As for North Canyon, their loss dropped their record down to an identical 2-4.
Maryvale didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 35-22 win against Copper Canyon on the 10th. As for North Canyon, they have also already played their next game, a 47-7 victory against Washington on the 10th.
