Shenango and Union Area are an even 3-3 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Wildcats will take on the Scotties at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Shenango 3.1, Union Area 2.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
For some reason, the away team has come away with the win the last five times Shenango and New Castle have met, but the home crowd finally got their W on Friday. The Wildcats took a 10-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Hurricanes. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Wildcats, who until this contest were averaging 3.12 runs allowed.
Addison Downing was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Zoe Offie, who went 3-for-4 with one run.
Meanwhile, Union Area had already won 12 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.6 runs) and they went ahead and made it 13 on Saturday. They never let the Greyhounds get on the board and left with a 10-0 victory. Ten seems to be a good number for the Scotties as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Union Area also got a great performance from Korynne Shannon as she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out ten over five innings pitched.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Irelyn Fisher, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. Maggie Joseph also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Union Area was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .455. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .318 or higher in 12 consecutive matchups.
Shenango's loss dropped their record down to 13-4. As for Union Area, their record is now 13-1.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Monday. Shenango hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.9 home runs per game. However, it's not like Union Area struggles in that department as they've been averaging 1.8 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Shenango might still be hurting after the 10-4 defeat they got from Union Area in their previous meeting back in March of 2023. Can the Wildcats avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
