Rhea County and Soddy Daisy are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2018, but likely not for long. The Golden Eagles will venture away from home to take on the Trojans at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Rhea County was handed a 11-run defeat in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Friday. They skirted past Bradley Central 4-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Golden Eagles have posted since March 21st.
The team relied heavily on Casen Kinney, who went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Halston Shaver, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs and one double.
Meanwhile, Soddy Daisy hadn't done well against Bradley Central recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Trojans never let the Bears get on the board and left with a 5-0 win. The game was the first time the Trojans have beaten the Bears on their field since May 8, 2019.
Not much got past Stephen Vickers, who gave up just six hits and racked up 11 Ks to keep Bradley Central off the board. Those 11 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Vickers.
At the plate, Soddy Daisy's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Brayden Maynor, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Braden Shell also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Soddy Daisy is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-9-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.4 runs over those games. As for Rhea County, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-17.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Rhea County has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Soddy Daisy struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Rhea County came up short against Soddy Daisy in their previous meeting back in March, falling 6-2. Can the Golden Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
