Cascades recap Oct. 3, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Vandercook Lake, who took down 374th ranked Vandercook Lake, 43-16.
Grass Lake moved up to 177 from 203 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Cascades. The Warriors climbed the ranks as a result of a 38-13 win over Manchester.
Grass Lake's dynamic duo of Logan Konopka and Jared Lazarz proved tough for the Flying Dutchmen to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Konopka threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns and Lazarz had 76 yards receiving. Frank Vuocolo helped Grass Lake's passing attack out by catching one ball for 34 yards.
Nathan Siegrist made the biggest impact on defense this week as East Jackson fell to Michigan Center. The 6-foot-0 senior pulled down one interception.
Jared Bruner was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 276 yards on 24 carries as Addison defeated Manchester. Dakota Smith also contributed to the rushing game with 69 yards on the ground.
The Warriors' Konopka and Lazarz have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Konopka has thrown for 784 yards this season, while Lazarz, a 6-foot-2 receiver, has 18 catches for 365 yards. Bruner from the Panthers leads the league in rushing with 594 yards.
A big matchup in Cascades this week will be when the Jayhawks take on Grass Lake. At the moment, Vandercook Lake is in fourth, while the Warriors are in second.
The Cardinals extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Trojans, 40-0. The victory was the sixth in a row for Michigan Center.
