Basketball Recap: East Wake Comes Up Short

If East Wake was feeling good fresh off their 52-11 takedown of Enloe last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The East Wake Warriors lost to the West Johnston Wildcats at home by a 41-25 margin on Tuesday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Warriors of the 48-33 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2024.

Despite the defeat, East Wake saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jayleigh Woods posted seven points and four steals. Woods has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played.

It was another big night for Makenzie Ricks, who earned 14 points along with eight steals and five boards for West Johnston. That makes it four consecutive games in which Ricks has scored at least a third of West Johnston's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Riley Yarnell, who put up two points and seven rebounds.

East Wake's loss dropped their record down to 4-8. As for West Johnston, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-8.

East Wake didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 43-38 victory against Hunt on the 9th. As for West Johnston, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 38-33 win against Southern Wayne on the 9th.
