The University Trailblazers will challenge the Eastern Hancock Royals at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. University is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11 runs per game this season.
On Wednesday, University came up short against Bloomington North and fell 4-1. The Trailblazers have struggled against the Cougars recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost matchup.
University saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Beckett Suh, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run.
Meanwhile, Eastern Hancock got the win against Bethesda Christian on Tuesday by a conclusive 11-3. Considering the Royals have won nine contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Gavin Jenkins and Caleb Retherford made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Jenkins pitched four innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits. Meanwhile, Retherford struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in May of 2025. At the plate, Jenkins got on base in three of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI, while Retherford went 1-for-5 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double. Jenkins is becoming a predictor of Eastern Hancock's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 10-1 (and 2-4 when he doesn't).
In other batting news, Hayden Rouse was a standout: he got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Conner Wittgren, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
Eastern Hancock has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season. As for University, their defeat dropped their record down to 15-8.
Thursday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. University has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .494. However, it's not like Eastern Hancock struggles in that department as they've averaged .472. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
