The Churchill Chargers waltzed into their matchup on Saturday with two straight wins but they left with three. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Lee 60-57. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Churchill to victory, but perhaps none more so than Rakiya Nelson, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds. Nelson hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Daphne Zuniga, who scored 14 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Rosanelly Pastrano and Debi Hernandez certainly did their best on Saturday to try and avoid the loss. Pastrano scored 22 points along with two steals, while Hernandez scored 21 points along with six rebounds. Hernandez hasn't dropped below 15points for three straight games. Lilah Yanover was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with two steals.
Churchill pushed their record up to 21-9 with that win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.0 points per game. As for Lee, their loss dropped their record down to 17-10.
Churchill will head out on the road to face off against Johnson at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Texas (Johnson is ranked 196th, while Churchill is ranked 174th). Lee will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against SA Roosevelt at 5:30 p.m. on January 16th. SA Roosevelt has now lost 11 straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since November 18.
