The Covington Trojans will head out to square off against the Southmont Mounties at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Covington has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the game with four straight losses, while Southmont will come in with six straight victories.
Covington fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Milford on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took an 8-5 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bearcats.
Alexus Peaslee spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and five unearned) runs on seven hits.
At the plate, Caydence Peaslee was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Alex Sutherlin was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one double.
Meanwhile, it was a classic North v. South duel when Southmont duked it out with North Montgomery on Saturday. The Mounties blew past the Chargin' Chargers 9-3. The result was nothing new for the Mounties, who have now won six contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Ella Barry was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one double. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Catie Himes and Anna Stokes did most of the damage at the plate: Himes went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run, while Stokes went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs. That's the most runs Stokes has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jenna Grino, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Southmont pushed their record up to 8-3 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Covington, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-8.
Covington might still be hurting after the 18-4 loss they got from Southmont in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Trojans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
