Even though the Mayfair Monsoons have not done well against the Downey Vikings recently (they were 0-3 in their previous three matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. Everything went Mayfair's way against Downey as Mayfair made off with a 78-55 victory. Given Mayfair's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 259th, while Downey is ranked 541st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Downey's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tyler Harris, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds and three steals. Shane Costello was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
The victory makes it two in a row for Mayfair and bumps their season record up to 9-8. As for Downey, they have fallen quite a ways from their 26-4 record last season and are now at 7-11.
Mayfair will be playing in front of their home fans against La Mirada at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. La Mirada knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past 19 matches -- so hopefully Mayfair likes a good challenge. As for Downey, they will head out on the road to face off against Warren at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
