Covington is 0-10 against South Vermillion since May of 2019 but things could change on Friday. The Trojans are taking a road trip to take on the Wildcats at 5:00 p.m.
Covington is headed into Friday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fifth straight game on Tuesday. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 7-6 heartbreaker at the hands of Benton Central.
Alex Sutherlin was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooke Rottmann, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run.
Meanwhile, South Vermillion got the win against Attica on Tuesday by a conclusive 15-9. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matches by six runs or more this season.
Shaylee Wallace made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Wallace was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Rosie Travioli, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. Mady Crim was another key player, going 4-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
South Vermillion was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .471. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
South Vermillion is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Covington, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-14.
Covington might still be hurting after the 12-0 loss they got from South Vermillion when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Trojans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
