Basketball Recap: Jude Mendez's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Brackenridge over Floresville

Brackenridge easily dispatched John Paul II on Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Brackenridge Eagles fell just short of the Floresville Tigers/Jaguars by a score of 71-68 on Friday. The Eagles were not able to make up for their defeat to the Tigers/Jaguars from their previous meeting back in February of 2015.

Several Eagles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jude Mendez, who went 8 for 11 on his way to 24 points. The game was Mendez's fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Damien Hernandez, who went 5 of 8 on his way to 15 points.

Leading Floresville to victory were Julien Peeler and Samuel Rodriguez. Peeler dropped a double-double on 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Rodriguez went 5 of 10 on his way to 17 points in addition to five assists and three steals. The dominant performance also gave Peeler a new career-high in assists (three). Another player making a difference was Ryland Parker, who went 5 for 10 on his way to 14 points and six boards.

Brackenridge has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests, which is still a better percentage than their 4-15 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.0 points per game. As for Floresville, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 4-9 record this season.
