Baseball Recap: Saturday's Victory Is Monte Vista's Fifth in Last Six Outings

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Monte Vista had no problem doing just that on Saturday. They never let the Peyton Panthers get on the board and left with a 16-0 win. The result was nothing new for the Pirates, who have now won 16 matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

Kaden Mellott was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Azariah Hurtado and Kobe Jiron did most of the damage at the plate: Hurtado went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Jiron got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Hurtado is becoming a predictor of Monte Vista's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 5-7 when he doesn't). Manny Jiron was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

Monte Vista always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .594. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Peyton only posted an OBP of .267.

Monte Vista has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-7 record this season. As for Peyton, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 20-3.

Coming up, Monte Vista will take on Fowler at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Pirates 3.8, the Grizzlies 2.5) so any runs scored will be well earned. Peyton does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
