Waco is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Friday. After each having a week off, they and the Brenham Cubs will shake off the rust and duke it out at 7:00 p.m. Waco has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the game with 12 straight losses, while Brenham will come in with five straight wins.
It was a proper cat-fight when Waco duked it out with San Angelo Central last Friday. The Lions were beaten by the Bobcats 48-6. While losing is never fun, the Lions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 793rd, while the Bobcats are ranked 259th).
Despite the defeat, Waco got top-tier performance from ZAY'DRIAN JOHNSON, who picked up 148 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Meanwhile, Brenham humbled Gilmer with a 49-7 victory. The Cubs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by 21 points or more this season.
Waco better keep an eye on Xyran Upshaw. He was instrumental in Brenham's win, rushing for 87 yards and a pair of scores on only 12 carries, while also throwing for 160 yards and two TDs. Cartelle Brown was Upshaw's top target, picking up 23 receiving yards.
Brenham was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 314 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in October of 2024.
Brenham's defense made their presence known, laying out Zade Taylor three times. Jase Mueller was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two sacks himself. Jrius Booker was another major factor on D, making 12 total tackles (1.0 for loss).
Brenham's victory bumped their record up to 5-0. As for Waco, their loss dropped their record down to 0-5.
