Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Haylee Freel and Jaydra Cordova Lead Sangre De Cristo to Victory

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Cotopaxi, Sangre de Cristo was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They took down the Moffat Cowboys 38-21. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Thunderbirds also won the last time the pair played back in February of 2024.

Sangre de Cristo was led to victory by Jaydra Cordova and Haylee Freel. Cordova dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten rebounds, while Freel went 6 for 13 en route to 14 points and five assists. The dominant performance also gave Cordova a new career-high in assists (three).

They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Sangre de Cristo was working as a unit and finished the game with ten assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Despite the loss, Moffat saw an underclassman step up: freshman Kandra Pollard almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine steals. Pollard is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Shelby Morley was another key player, putting up no points and eight boards.

Sangre de Cristo is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 4-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 23.8 points per game. As for Moffat, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 4-5.

Sangre de Cristo didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 53-11 loss against Del Norte on the 21st. Moffat has also already played their next contest, a 63-23 defeat against Centennial on the 24th.
