The Dansville Mustangs will take on the Newark Reds at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Dansville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
Dansville is headed into the matchup having just suffered their biggest loss since May 22, 2024 on Monday. They lost 11-1 to Livonia. The Mustangs haven't had much luck with the Bulldogs recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Dansville saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mark Sick, who went 1-for-3 with one run.
Meanwhile, it may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Newark ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Mynderse Academy, sneaking past 8-6. The game was the first time the Reds have beaten the Blue Devils on their field since June 4, 2021.
Nolan Rice made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 4.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in May of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two runs and two doubles. He is becoming a predictor of Newark's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 3-5 when he doesn't).
In other batting news, Cody Forjone was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI. He has become a key player for Newark: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-5 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Carlos Martinez, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Newark's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-6. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.7 runs on average over those games. As for Dansville, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Dansville has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Newark struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Dansville skirted past Newark 8-7 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
