The Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley Falcons will head out to square off against the Monticello Sages at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.3 runs per game this season.
Last Tuesday, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley got the win against Paxton-Buckley-Loda by a conclusive 15-1. The win continues a trend for the Falcons in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now won five in a row.
Mallory Rosendahl made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 4-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI.
In other batting news, Izzy Gawthrop and Bailey Bunting did most of the damage at the plate: Gawthrop scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4, while Bunting went 2-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and one double. Gawthrop also put up a double, which was her first of the season. Jillian Rosendahl was another key player, scoring a run while going 3-for-5.
Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .389. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Paxton-Buckley-Loda only posted a batting average of .125.
Meanwhile, Monticello put another one in the bag on Thursday to keep their perfect season alive. They came out on top against Prairie Central by a score of 5-1. Those five runs were actually the fewest the Sages have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
Like Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, Monticello also got a great game from a two-way player: Cassidee Stoffel. She struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. Stoffel was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI.
In other batting news, Monticello let Lucy Leatherwood and Madison Highland run wild. Leatherwood scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4, while Highland got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two RBI and one double. Those three hits gave Leatherwood a new career-high.
Monticello's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-0. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.5 runs over those games. As for Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, their record is now 5-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Monticello struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
