On Sunday, the Evangel Christian Eagles faced the Newport Wildcats in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Evangel Christian fell 69-62 to Newport. Evangel Christian's loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.
Newport got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jabari Covington out in front who scored 22 points along with six rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Covington has scored all season. James Turner was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Evangel Christian's loss dropped their record down to 14-4. As for Newport, they are on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 15 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 21-3 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Evangel Christian will take on Madison Central at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Newport, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Bellevue at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Bellevue will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Kentucky Rankings (they are ranked 191st, while Newport is ranked sixth).
