La Costa Canyon is a perfect 10-0 against San Dieguito Academy since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Mavericks will venture away from home to square off against the Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (La Costa Canyon 2.1, San Dieguito Academy 3.5) so any runs scored will be well earned.
La Costa Canyon came into this matchup off a tough six-run loss last Saturday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of Bonita Vista by a score of 2-0 on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Mavericks have suffered since March 8th.
Norah Coulsell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on five hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances.
At the plate, La Costa Canyon saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sienna Curry, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, San Dieguito Academy entered their tilt with Valley Center two weeks ago with five consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with six. They were the clear victors by a 14-2 margin over the Jaguars. The Mustangs' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Lauryn McGarry made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. McGarry was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, San Dieguito Academy got a massive performance out of Willow Wright, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2. What's more, Wright posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. Rachel Madden was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI and two doubles.
San Dieguito Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Valley Center only posted a batting average of .300.
San Dieguito Academy's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-1-1. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for La Costa Canyon, their loss ended a seven-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 8-5-1.
Everything went La Costa Canyon's way against San Dieguito Academy in their previous meeting back in March of 2024, as La Costa Canyon made off with an 11-1 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mavericks since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
