Baseball Recap: Clawson Sets Scoring Season-High Against Fitzgerald

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Clawson). They were the clear victors by a 22-3 margin over the Fitzgerald Spartans on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Trojans, who have now won 11 contests by eight runs or more so far this season.

Elliott Groves and Jackson Hein made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Groves tossed two innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Hein tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Groves has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Groves got on base in five of his six plate appearances with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base, while Hein got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two runs. Those two runs gave Hein a new career-high.

In other batting news, Trent Stephan was incredible, getting on base in two of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Shane Dunlap was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one double.

Clawson always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .542. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Fitzgerald only posted an OBP of .400.

Clawson has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 13 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-6 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.1 runs over those games. As for Fitzgerald, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-9.

Looking ahead, Clawson will take on Capac at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Chiefs will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something the Trojans surely won't give up without a fight. As for Fitzgerald, they will challenge Hazel Park at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
