The Carlin Railroaders's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their sixth straight loss. They fell just short of Mammoth by a score of 33-31. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Carlin came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 91st in Nevada, while Mammoth is ranked 1021st in California).
Carlin's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mariah Urenda, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Urenda scored a full 38.7% of Carlin's points, the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Caileigh Shilts, who scored eight points along with 11 rebounds.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mammoth to victory, but perhaps none more so than Nicole Smyth, who scored 13 points along with eight steals. Smyth is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last six games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Audrey Borunda, who scored eight points along with 12 rebounds.
Carlin's defeat dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Mammoth, their victory bumped their record up to 3-4.
Carlin is on the road again on Friday and play against Round Mountain at 11:00 a.m. on December 15th. As for Mammoth, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Rosamond at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Rosamond's defense has only allowed 29.7 points per game this season, so Mammoth's offense will have their work cut out for Mammoth.
