Calvert and Huntingtown are an even 5-5 against one another since September of 2015, but not for long. The Cavaliers will head out to face off against the Hurricanes at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Calvert's defense has only allowed 7.8 points per game this season, so Huntingtown's offense will have their work cut out for them.
On Friday, Calvert came up short against Patuxent and fell 21-14. The Cavaliers haven't had much luck with the Panthers recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Although Calvert took the loss, they still got scores from Andrew Douglas and Didier Marroquin.
Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led Huntingtown over Northern in every quarter on their way to victory on Friday. The Hurricanes put the hurt on the Patriots with a sharp 35-14 win. The victory continues a trend for the Hurricanes in their matchups with the Patriots: they've now won three in a row.
Calvert better focus on containing Dominic Hickman and Gabriel Copeland as the pair were huge in Huntingtown's win. Hickman rushed for 100 yards and a pair of TDs on only 13 carries, while Copeland rushed for 120 yards and one touchdown while picking up 7.1 yards per carry. That's the most rushing yards Hickman has posted since back in December of 2024.
Huntingtown was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 235 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 221 rushing yards in three consecutive games.
Huntingtown didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Derron 'DJ' Turner and Xavier Jones. Turner also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with 11. Jones got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Having lost for the first time this season, Calvert fell to 7-1. As for Huntingtown, their win bumped their record up to 6-2.
Thursday's contest will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Douglas and Copeland. Douglas just won't slow down this season and has run in 12 touchdowns while averaging 96.6 rushing yards per game. Copeland has been a dominant force too and has run in 12 touchdowns while averaging 129.6 rushing yards per game.
Calvert beat Huntingtown 20-7 when the teams last played back in October of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cavaliers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
