Basketball Recap: Sutherland Takes a Loss

The Sutherland Sailors ended up a good deal behind the Potter-Dix Coyotes on Friday and lost 74-59.

Despite the loss, Sutherland still got an impressive performance from Mason Mortimer, who posted 24 points in addition to six steals and five boards. Mortimer is becoming a predictor of the Sailors' success: when he posts at least 15 points the team is 3-1 (and 0-3 when he doesn't). Jackson Saner was another key player, putting up 15 points and seven rebounds.

Potter-Dix's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Landon Gasseling led the charge by going 11-for-22 en route to 34 points and six boards. Gasseling's big performance that morning made it seven games in a row in which he has scored at least 15 points. Another player making a difference was Callen McConnell, who shot 47% from the field to rack up 16 points along with eight rebounds and eight steals.

Sutherland has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-4 record this season. As for Potter-Dix, they moved to 3-3 with that win, which also ended their three-game losing streak.
