5A Region 3 recap October 22, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in 5A Region 3 this week, Bingham beat Copper Hills 52-0. The victory was the ninth in a row for the team.
The Grizzlies lost to Bingham 52-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Kyle Gearig provided a threat through the air and on the ground as David Peck's team beat Copper Hills. He completed 9 passes for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns and also ran for 56 yards. Gearig's favorite target this week was Josh Gurr, who caught 2 passes for 46 yards.
Chipper Lucero threw for 216 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was 13-21 with 0 interceptions.
Max Johnson was a key player and the best on defense this week as Alta beat West Jordan. The 5-foot-10 senior recorded 1 fumble and grabbed 2 sacks.
Lucero put up the best numbers through the air as the Hawks topped the Jaguars. Lucero's favorite target this week was Nate Teahan, who caught 6 passes for 115 yards.
Alta's Lucero and Mack Richards have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-2 quarterback Lucero has thrown for 2,092 yards this season, while Richards has 48 catches for 892 yards. Jordan's Austin Kafentzis leads the league in rushing yards with 1,074.
The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between the Miners and Robert Stephens' team. Bingham enters the game ranked second in the state, while the Hawks ranks 15th.
Going into this week's game against West Jordan, the Beetdiggers' Kafentzis needs 161 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season. Accruing a total of 14 touchdowns this year, Kafentzis has thrown for 1,839 yards with 14 interceptions.
Scott Nichols of the the Miners is only 81 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 114 carries Nichols has put up 919 yards this year.
Fans will be thrilled by an exciting game in the secondary when the Hawks' Richards goes up against Bingham's Sky Manu.
Next week's game between Alta and the Miners will feature an aerial matchup as Lucero tests his arm against Manu's defensive ability.
The league will see a high scoring game when Bingham and the Hawks face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Miners comes in having scored 373 this season, while Alta has scored 292. Bingham scored 52 points last week as it topped John Teuscher's team.
The Miners led 5A Region 3 in scoring this week by notching 52 points on the Grizzlies. Gearig ran for 56 yards in the win.
