The Gateway Eagles entered their tilt with the Canterbury Cougars with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. Gateway strolled past Canterbury with points to spare on Friday, taking the game 77-62. Given Gateway's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 129th, while Canterbury is ranked 602nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Gateway was led to victory by Christopher Davis and Tavian Cook. Davis dropped a double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Cook dropped a double-double on 25 points and 11 rebounds. The contest was Cook's ninth in a row with at least ten points. Andrew Leopold was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with seven rebounds.
Gateway's win bumped their record up to 9-1. As for Canterbury, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-9.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gateway is on the road again on Saturday and play against North Tampa Christian Academy at 8:00 p.m. on January 6th. North Tampa Christian Academy is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 69.8 points per game. As for Canterbury, they will head out on the road to face off against Gateway Charter at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Gateway Charter's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last eight matches.
