Gahr is 8-2 against Downey since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Gladiators will head out on the road to challenge the Vikings at 3:15 p.m. The game will give Gahr their first taste of in-conference action this season.
Gahr easily dispatched Cerritos on Thursday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Gladiators fell just short of Kennedy by a score of 2-0 on Tuesday. The matchup marked the first time this season in which the Gladiators were not able to get on the board.
Bella Gonzalez was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over 4.2 innings pitched.
At the plate, Gahr saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Megan Wong, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Downey's hitters rose to the challenge against a Panthers pitching crew that boasted an average of only 3.67 runs allowed on Tuesday. The Vikings put the hurt on Corona with a sharp 10-2 victory. The result was nothing new for the Vikings, who have now won six contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Giana Castillo-Flores spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on nine hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Juliet Gonzalez was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in February. Sophia Hernandez was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Downey was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .382. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in four consecutive games.
Downey's win was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 11-2. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.7 runs over those games. As for Gahr, their defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 7-6.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Gahr hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.8 home runs per game. However, it's not like Downey struggles in that department as they've been averaging 1.1 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Gahr was able to grind out a solid win over Downey when the teams last played back in May of 2025, winning 4-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Gladiators since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
