Virginia City and Pyramid Lake are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2022, but likely not for long. The Muckers will face off against the Lakers at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Virginia City has now lost ten straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since March 22.
Saturday just wasn't the day for Virginia City's offense. They lost 14-0 to Mineral County on Saturday.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Pyramid Lake and Virginia City meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Tuesday. The Lakers blew past the Muckers 13-1.
John Kelly was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 17 over seven innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Pyramid Lake is 4-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-5 otherwise. Kelly was also big at the plate, earning one run and three stolen bases. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.
In other batting news, Pyramid Lake let Albert Phoenix and Joshua Shaw run wild. Phoenix went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI, while Shaw got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. That's the most runs Phoenix has posted since back in February. Noah Sarabia was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Pyramid Lake has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Virginia City, their loss dropped their record down to 2-16.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Virginia City has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Pyramid Lake struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Virginia City might still be hurting after the 13-1 defeat they got from Pyramid Lake when the teams last played on Tuesday. Can the Muckers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
