Springport has gone 6-1 against Maple Valley recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Springport Spartans will look to defend their home court against the Maple Valley Lions at 7:00 p.m. The two teams have had a bumpy ride up to this point with four consecutive losses for Springport and three for Maple Valley.
Last Friday, Springport opened the new year with a less-than-successful 45-37 loss to Stockbridge.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Reese Siefert, who posted nine points.
Even though they lost, Springport smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 29 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Maple Valley faced off against Stockbridge back in December of 2024. Maple Valley had to suffer through a 67-33 loss at the hands of Stockbridge. While losing is never fun, the Lions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 541st, while the Panthers are ranked 246th).
Springport will have to keep a close watch on Ines Sanchez Feito and Mariah Vandorp, a pair of players who had a big impact on Maple Valley's prior game. Sanchez Feito put up 19 points in addition to six steals and five boards, while Vandorp posted seven points. That was a full 57.6% of Maple Valley's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points.
Springport's defeat dropped their record down to 2-4. As for Maple Valley, their loss dropped their record down to 1-5.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Springport has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 34.3 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Maple Valley struggles in that department as they've been averaging 29 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Everything came up roses for Springport against Maple Valley in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, as the team secured a 58-1 win. Will Springport repeat their success, or does Maple Valley have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
