Basketball Recap: Sheffield Comes Up Short

Sheffield lost against Memphis School of Excellence Winchester back in December of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Sheffield Knights had to suffer through a 68-11 loss at the hands of the Memphis School of Excellence Winchester Eagles. While losing is never fun, the Knights can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee basketball rankings (they are ranked 237th, while the Eagles are ranked 67th).

Despite the loss, Sheffield saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Deonna Allen posted seven points. Allen is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played.

Leading Memphis School of Excellence Winchester to victory were Tatianna Woods and Ahmiya Thompson. Woods went 9 of 14 on her way to 24 points along with seven steals and five assists, while Thompson dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 boards. That's the most assists Woods has posted since back in January. Shaniyah Matlock was another key player, putting up 11 points and four steals.

Sheffield's defeat was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-5. As for Memphis School of Excellence Winchester, the win keeps them at an undefeated 5-0.

Sheffield wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 46-24 victory against City University School of Liberal Arts on the 10th. As for Memphis School of Excellence Winchester, they will face off against Power Center Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Memphis School of Excellence Winchester knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past five matchups -- so hopefully Power Center Academy likes a good challenge.
