The Horizon Honors Eagles had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 31.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They came out on top against Santa Cruz Valley by a score of 58-49. Given Horizon Honors' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 122nd, while Santa Cruz Valley is ranked 247th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Matthew McEnaney continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 18 points along with nine rebounds and seven blocks. He is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he's now posted two or more in the last ten games he's played. Max Gerelick was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with four steals.
Several Dust Devils players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Nathan Harris, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 18 rebounds. Harris is absolutely dominating the rebound category: he's posted at least eight every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Daniel Contreras, who scored 16 points.
Horizon Honors' win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-7. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.8 points per game. As for Santa Cruz Valley, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-7 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Horizon Honors will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Tempe Prep at 7:00 p.m. on January 16th. Tempe Prep has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Santa Cruz Valley, they will head out on the road to challenge Sequoia Pathway Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Sequoia Pathway Academy comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 19 points in their last four games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse.
