Avenal and Mendota are an even 5-5 against one another since September of 2019, but not for long. The Buccaneers will head out on the road to take on the Aztecs at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Avenal will be strutting in after a win while Mendota will be coming in after a loss.
On Tuesday, Avenal got the win against Firebaugh by a conclusive 3-0. The Buccaneers haven't had any issues with the Eagles recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive victory against them.
Avenal never let Firebaugh on the board, but things got pretty close in the third set. The final score came out to 25-9, 25-16, 25-23.
Guadalupe Santillan and Yasmin Garcilazo were among the main playmakers for Avenal as the former had nine kills, four digs, four blocks, and four aces and the latter had nine aces and three digs. That's the most aces Garcilazo has posted since back in October of 2024.
They weren't the only good servers: Avenal was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 25 aces. That's the most aces they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Mendota was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 16th straight defeat. They took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of Coalinga.
Mendota started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. The match finished with set scores of 24-26, 25-6, 25-7, 25-20.
Mendota's loss dropped their record down to 1-18. As for Avenal, their win bumped their record up to 14-12-2.
Avenal beat Mendota 3-1 in their previous matchup back in November of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Buccaneers since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
