Softball Recap: Clinton Takes a Loss

Clinton had lost seven straight at home, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 4-12 to make it eight. They lost 10-2 to the Tuscola Warriors. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Warriors this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 8-6 on April 10th.

Aliviyah Haynes spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and eight unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Avery Smith was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

As for Tuscola, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 11-6 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.9 runs on average over those games.

On Tuscola's side, Kinzie Cleland made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Cleland was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and one double. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Ava Boyer and Allison Pettry did most of the damage at the plate: Boyer went 1-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Pettry went 2-for-4 with two runs and one triple. That's the most runs Pettry has posted since April 1st. Bella Wishard also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

Clinton and Tuscola could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. The Maroons will take on Tri-Valley at 4:30 p.m. on Monday with a big rank disadvantage (474 vs. 108). Meanwhile, Tuscola (ranked 290th) will meet Meridian (ranked 126th) at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
