For much of Saturday’s 98-63 Class 1 state championship win over Newtown-Harris, Scott County Central appeared to have seven players on the floor at all times.
Especially on defense, where the Braves were credited with 22 steals and forced the Tigers into 32 turnovers.
“I think we played them right on,” Braves coach Ronnie Cookson said.

Cookson now has over 700 career wins and 13 state titles at the school.
“We put the defense on them," he said. "I mean we really did. I really felt that the kids came out there and played them exactly how they needed to play them.”
The Tigers took a 9-8 lead with 5 minutes, 33 seconds remaining in the opening quarter on TJ Ireland’s 3-pointer following a steal by Cameron Cool. Then Newtown-Harris began to suffocate under intense defensive pressure from the Braves.
Scott County Central scored the next seven points of the quarter to take a 15-9 lead on Otto Porter’s layup.
Then, following a layup and a free throw by Ireland, the Braves scored six straight and 19 of the final 21 points of the first quarter to earn a 34-14 advantage.

The 34 points scored in the opening quarter tied Jefferson City and O’Hara’s efforts in 1993 and 2005 respectively for the second highest point total in a quarter in Missouri Show-Me Showdown history.
Riverview Gardens still owns the record of 37 points in a quarter, set in the Class 4A final in 1992.
Scott County Central broke the tournament’s points scored in a half mark after adding 30 second-quarter points to its total in taking a 64-35 advantage at intermission. Greenfield had the old mark of 56 in the 1991 Class 1A semifinal against Wellington-Napoleon.
The Braves were well on their way to hitting the century mark after stretching the advantage to 83-51 after three quarters. But a 30-point mercy rule required the game clock to run continuously throughout the fourth quarter.
With 10 seconds remaining in the contest Alan Timmons, who knocked down a jumper seconds earlier to end the scoring in the contest, missed a jumper.
The 98 points, however, were enough to break Joplin Memorial’s 1978 record of 97 points scored in a championship game.
St. Francis Borgia, who won the Class 4 title on March 14, set the tournament record of 102 points scored in a game when the Knights knocked off Marshall in a 1993 Class 3A semifinal.
Bobby Hatchett scored a game-high 29 points, dished 13 assists and was credited with five steals in the win. Drew Thomas also scored 29 points in concluding his high school career.
Sophomore Otto Porter added 24 points, 12 rebounds and four steals for the Braves. KJ Cool and Ireland paced the Tigers with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
Lee Falls Short of 3,000Glasgow’s Jay Lee ended his prep career on a bittersweet note.
The 6-foot senior scored 28 points in Saturday’s 72-62 Class 1 consolation win over Chadwick. Unfortunately his effort at becoming the sixth Missouri boy high school basketball player to net 3,000 points fell one point short.
Lee scored his final points on a steal and lay-up with 1:33 remaining in the contest. But, 39 seconds later he fouled out.
Ben Meyer and Chris Wells contributed to the consolation win by recording double-doubles. Meyer had 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Wells totaled 16 points and 11 caroms.
High ScorersCory Via of Harrisburg scored 48 points to tie Nevada’s Chris Smith for second on the single-game scoring list in an 81-60 Class 2 semifinal win over Laquey…Laquey’s Michael Wilson scored 30 points in an 81-60 Class 2 semifinal loss to Harrisburg…Drew Thomas of Scott County Central scored 31 points in a 78-44 Class 1 semifinal win over Glasgow.
